Vintage Bulgarian Suitcase 1976 – Original Cardboard Travel Case

A wonderful vintage Bulgarian suitcase dating from 1976, complete with its original manufacturer's label.

The suitcase was made in Plovdiv, Bulgaria by the “Uspeh” enterprise of the Union of the Blind in Bulgaria. The original paper label is still preserved inside and gives unusually detailed information about the piece, including the manufacturer, Model 88, the original retail price of 11.50 Bulgarian leva, and the production standard BDS 1667-72. A dated factory stamp indicates 1976.

According to the original label, the suitcase is made primarily from cardboard, a material commonly used for lightweight luggage and storage cases during this period.

It has a wonderfully authentic utilitarian appearance and is a great surviving example of everyday Bulgarian design from the 1970s. The original label makes it particularly interesting as a piece of Bulgarian social and industrial history.

The suitcase shows normal signs of age and previous use, including surface wear, marks and other imperfections consistent with a vintage object. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Today it would make a fantastic decorative storage piece, photography prop, theatre or film prop, vintage shop display, or addition to a collection of Eastern European and Bulgarian memorabilia.
