Handmade 1930s Romanian Wooden Bread Box, Traditional Backpack Bread Carrier

This beautiful handmade wooden bread box comes from rural Romania and dates back to the 1930s.
Crafted entirely by hand, it was used to carry bread on a person’s back, secured with leather straps (now missing). These boxes were part of the daily life of farmers and shepherds, protecting the bread during long days in the fields or mountain pastures.

The piece is made of carved and steamed wood, joined with wooden pegs and small nails. Its elongated oval shape and delicately decorated edges reflect the traditional folk craftsmanship of the region. The interior still bears the marks of use, giving it a warm, authentic patina.
