This is an exceptional antique Bulgarian anatomical wall model depicting a cross-section of the human head in remarkable sculptural detail. Crafted in solid plaster, it was used in Bulgarian medical and biology classrooms between the 1930s and 1950s.
The model presents an impressive level of craftsmanship:
-finely shaped cranial structure with visible bone cavities;
-beautifully rendered muscle groups in deep burgundy tones;
-detailed teeth, jaw and nasal passages;
-a three-dimensional depiction of the brain with hand-painted vascular lines;
-realistic eye structure, partially embedded as originally designed;
The paintwork is entirely hand-applied in soft anatomical colours typical of pre-1950s educational aids. The board retains its original grey-blue paint and shows exactly the kind of patina you expect from a genuine, heavily used teaching model.
This piece has a strong presence—raw, tactile, and full of character. Perfect for:
• collectors of early scientific/medical objects
• interior designers working with eclectic, vintage or cabinet-of-curiosities aesthetics
• film/theatre set decoration
• medical offices, studios and creative spaces that want a conversation piece
