This exceptional antique lamp is a Bulgarian-made Sun–Earth astronomical demonstration model, produced around the 1950s for use in schools or scientific institutions.

The model was designed to illustrate the relationship between the Earth and the Sun, combining light and mechanical movement to demonstrate key astronomical principles. The electric lamp represents the Sun, while a globe mounted on a long metal arm orbits around the lamp. At the same time, the globe rotates around its own axis, clearly demonstrating Earth’s axial rotation alongside its movement around the Sun.

The heavy circular base is fitted with a calendar ring marked with the months of the year in Cyrillic, reinforcing its original educational purpose and firmly placing it within the Eastern European scientific tradition of the period.

This is not a decorative object, but a genuine teaching instrument, built for durability, clarity of demonstration, and long-term institutional use.

During the first half of the 20th century, Bulgaria produced a wide range of educational scientific apparatus for physics and astronomy. These models were typically made from solid metal and designed to withstand intensive classroom use. Instruments combining illumination, rotation, and astronomical demonstration were especially valued and were rarely preserved once they became obsolete, making surviving examples particularly uncommon today.
