Vintage Sri Lankan Hand Carved Wooden Kolam Mask – Folk Theatre Tribal Wall Decor

This is an authentic vintage hand-carved wooden mask originating from Sri Lanka. Skillfully carved from a single piece of wood and hand-painted in black, white, red and blue, the mask depicts a dramatic character with bulging eyes, a prominent nose, curled moustache and expressive grin.

Kolam masks of this type were traditionally used in Sri Lankan folk theatre and ceremonial dance performances. They formed an important part of the island's rich cultural traditions, where performers transformed themselves into kings, noblemen, demons, spirits and comic characters through elaborate costumes and masks.

The piece shows beautiful traces of age and use, giving it a genuine character that only decades of history can create. Today it makes a striking wall decoration and an excellent addition to any collection of ethnographic art, tribal objects or world folk art.

The mask retains its original hand-painted finish and suspension cord.
