Antique Cast Iron Book Press

A beautiful and authentic antique cast iron book press, also known as a copying press or nipping press, dating most likely from the late 19th to early 20th century. These heavy presses were essential tools in bookbinder workshops, printing houses, and offices, where they were used to flatten and press freshly bound books, papers, and documents under even pressure. In the 19th century, similar presses were also used to create copies of handwritten letters using damp copying books.

This piece has a wonderful industrial character with its solid cast iron construction, large threaded screw mechanism, and beautiful aged patina acquired through decades of use. It remains fully functional and can still be used for traditional bookbinding, paper pressing, flower pressing, or simply as a striking decorative object in a library, office, or industrial-style interior.

The press has a practical medium size and an impressive weight of 13.7 kg, giving it excellent stability and a substantial feel. Similar cast iron presses were commonly produced during the Victorian period and around the turn of the 20th century.
