Antique Hand-Painted Transylvanian Wall Cabinet – Romanian Folk Art Hanging Cupboard

A charming and highly decorative antique Romanian hand-painted corner cabinet, a beautiful example of traditional peasant furniture from the Romanian countryside. This type of small wall-mounted cupboard was commonly used in village homes to store everyday items, small household objects, candles, religious items, or precious belongings, while at the same time adding color and decoration to the interior.

The cabinet is crafted from solid wood and painted in a traditional folk style with vivid blue, red,white and yellow floral motifs. The flowers are characteristic decorative elements frequently found in the painted furniture traditions of Transylvania and Banat, regions well known for their richly ornamented peasant interiors. Painted corner cupboards, shelves, chests, and wardrobes were an important part of the traditional Romanian farmhouse aesthetic, especially from the 18th to early 20th century.

The cabinet has a beautiful architectural shape resembling a small village house, with a triangular roof, hand-painted façade, and original rustic construction. The back remains in untouched aged wood, showing its authentic handmade character and traditional craftsmanship.

Mounting

This piece was originally designed to be placed in the corner of a room. The original hand-forged wire hook on the back is still present and was used for hanging the cabinet on a wall nail or hook. Due to its age and weight, we recommend using a strong modern wall fixing suitable for the wall type and weight of the cabinet.

Most likely late 19th century to early 20th century (circa 1880–1920), although exact dating is difficult without provenance.

Condition

Good antique condition with beautiful signs of age and use. There are losses to the paint, scratches, old repairs, cracks and wear to the wood, especially visible on the back and lower areas. The interior shows dark staining and traces of long use. These imperfections are part of the cabinet’s authentic rustic character and history.
