Antique Indian Wooden Oil Purse, Primitive Hand-Carved Oil Carrier

Wonderful antique hand-carved Indian wooden oil purse, dating to the early 20th century (circa 1900–1930). These distinctive wooden vessels were traditionally used by farmers to carry lamp oil, grease, tar, or other lubricants needed for maintaining carts, wagons, and agricultural equipment. Similar containers were also occasionally used to store tinder or other essential supplies.

Handcrafted from a solid block of wood and fitted with thick hand-forged wrought-iron hardware, the oil purse features its original forged-iron bail handle, allowing it to be carried by hand or hung from a cart or wagon while travelling. Its simple but ingenious construction reflects the practical craftsmanship of rural India.

Today, pieces like this are highly sought after by collectors of primitive antiques and folk art. The weathered wood, forged iron fittings, and rich natural patina give it exceptional character, making it a striking decorative object for farmhouse, rustic, wabi-sabi, or eclectic interiors.
