Pair of Large Vintage Chinese Satsuma Style Porcelain Vases

A spectacular matching pair of large vintage Chinese porcelain vases, richly decorated in the Satsuma style.

Each vase features an elaborate continuous scene with traditionally dressed figures, horses, architecture and mountainous landscapes, surrounded by highly detailed floral and geometric borders. Deep brown and green sections around the neck and base are highlighted with extensive gold decoration and raised enamel detailing, giving the pair a particularly rich and ornate appearance.

The vases have an elegant tall baluster shape with slightly flared rims and make a very impressive pair at 49 cm / 19.3 in high. Their large size and matching decoration make them beautiful statement pieces for a maximalist, eclectic, traditional or Asian-inspired interior.

Both vases bear a red four-character mark on the underside reading “Made in China” (中國製造 / Zhongguo Zhi Zao). Based on their style, decoration and mark, they date from the second half of the 20th century, most likely circa 1970s–1980s.

Although inspired by Japanese Satsuma ware, these are Chinese-made Satsuma-style decorative porcelain, rather than Japanese Satsuma.

The pair is in vintage condition with signs of age and previous display. There may be light surface marks and wear to the gilded and painted decoration consistent with their age. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
