Vintage Bulgarian Model Airplane, 1960s-1970s, Handmade Wood Construction

$196.95

An unusual vintage Bulgarian flying model airplane, most likely dating from the 1960s or 1970s, featuring historical Bulgarian military aviation markings and beautiful handmade construction.

This old aircraft model was originally built for powered flight, possibly with radio-control equipment, rather than simply as a decorative display piece. It is constructed primarily of wood, with additional metal, plastic, and covering materials used for the wings, fuselage, cockpit, and mechanical components.

The airplane features a single-propeller design, an enclosed cockpit with transparent panels, a low-wing configuration, landing wheels, and detailed tail surfaces. Its upper surfaces are painted in a dark military green-grey, while the underside is finished in a contrasting turquoise-blue.

One of its most interesting features is the presence of historical Bulgarian military aviation insignia, consisting of black diagonal St. Andrew's crosses on white backgrounds, applied to the wings, fuselage, and tail.

These distinctive markings were used by the Bulgarian Air Force during the Second World War, particularly between 1941 and 1944.

Historical Inspiration

Although the model itself is believed to date from the 1960s–1970s, its appearance and markings suggest that it was inspired by fighter aircraft from the Second World War.

The design shares certain characteristics with historical aircraft such as the French Dewoitine D.520, which served with the Bulgarian Air Force, and the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

These similarities include its low-mounted wings, enclosed cockpit, single-engine configuration, and compact military fighter appearance.

However, the model has not been positively identified as a reproduction of either aircraft. It may represent a simplified interpretation of a historical fighter or an original handmade flying model inspired by wartime aviation.

During the 1960s and 1970s, aeromodelling was a popular technical hobby in Bulgaria, supported by modelling clubs and organized aviation activities. Handmade powered aircraft models were constructed using traditional woodworking techniques and lightweight covering materials.

This airplane is an interesting surviving example of that aeromodelling tradition, with the exact maker and production date remaining unknown.
